What Age Tech Entrepreneurs Started Programming? Probably Younger Than You Think

There’s no dought Mark Zuckerberg is one of the most famous entrepreneurs in the world. You can watch the movie “The Social Network” to know how he created Facebook.

According to this article, when he started to program, he was not trying to learn computer science, but he wanted to make something fun for him and his sisters.

Dustin Moskovitz – Founder of Asana, Inc and Facebook, Inc.

Age Started Programming: 20

Dustin Moskovitz is famous as a co-founder of Facebook. He has a nice episode about started to code. Back in 2005, Facebook was gaining popularity inside Havard University. At that time, Dustin wanted to join Facebook, but he didn’t know the PHP programming language which Facebook was built upon. So, Mark told him to study PHP at first. Dustin came back after a few days and said he learned PHP and ready to join, but actually, he learned Perl language, which is a very different language than PHP. This is how he started to write code.

After he left Facebook, he started a new startup called Asana, which just went public on Sep 30, 2020.

 

Patrick Collison – Co-founder of Stripe, Inc.

Age Started Programming: 13

Probably, you are not familiar with Stripe, Inc. However, their company values eye hopping $36 Billion as of today. The company is offering tools that enable companies to implement credit card payment easily. The company was founded by Patric Collison and his brother John Collison in 2010. He was only 21 years old when he started the company.

According to this interview, he started to learn PHP programming language when he was 13.

Max Levchin – Co-founder of PayPal, Inc, and CEO of Affirm, Inc.

Age Started Programming: 10

Max Levchin is an immigrant from Kyiv, Ukraine. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science at the  University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2017. In 2008, he started a company with Peter Thiel, and it gradually became PayPal after merged with X.com, founded by Elon Musk. He’s also famous as a founder of Affirm, values at $2.9 Billion in 2019.

Age Started Programming: 14

Jack Dorsey dropped out of NY University in 2019. In 2000, he started his first company which was not so successful. He joined Twitter in 2005 as a co-founder and became CEO of the company, which turned into a big success. After he left Twitter, he started Square, Inc, and it became another big success. In 2015, he got back to the CEO of Twitter.  You can read the details of the story of twitter on “Hatching Twitter.”

Elon Musk – CEO of Tesla, Inc and the Founder and CEO of Space X, Co-founder of PayPal, Inc.

Elon Musk is definitely a star in Silicon Valley. He created multiple multi-billion dollar companies includes Tesla, Space X, and PayPal. He already owns tons of money but still pursuing his dreams and working harder than anybody else.

Conclusion

As you see, many tech founders started to learn programming at around 10 years old. One thing I need to mention is that computer was not so common when some of those founders were 10 years old. So, possibly future successful tech founders are starting to learn to code earlier than those tech-founders.
